Jesus Heals a Paralytic
(Matthew 9:1-8; Luke 5:17-26)

1And He having entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that He is in the house. 2And many were gathered together, so as to have no more space, not even at the door. And He was speaking the word to them.

3And they come, bringing to Him a paralytic, being carried by four. 4And not being able to come near to Him on account of the crowd, they removed the roof where He was, and having broken it up, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.

5And Jesus, having seen their faith, says to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

6And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7“Why does this man speak thus? He blasphemes! Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone?”

8And immediately Jesus, having known in His spirit that they are reasoning thus within themselves, says to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your mat, and walk’? 10But that you might know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on the earth...” He says to the paralytic, 11“I say to you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your home.”

12And he arose, and immediately, having taken up the mat, he went forth before all, so as for all to be amazed and to glorify God, saying, “Never did we see thus.”

The Calling of Levi
(Matthew 9:9-13; Luke 5:27-32)

13And He went forth again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He taught them.

14And passing on, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and says to him, “Follow Me.” And having arisen, he followed Him.

15And it came to pass in His reclining in his house, that many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they were following Him. 16And the scribes of the Pharisees, having seen Him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, were saying to His disciples, “Why does He eata with the tax collectors and sinners?”

17And Jesus having heard, says to them, “Those being strong have no need of a physician, but those being sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Questions about Fasting
(Matthew 9:14-15; Luke 5:33-35)

18And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting. And they come and say to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

19And Jesus said to them, “Are the sons of the bridechamber able to fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long a time as they have the bridegroom with them, they are not able to fast. 20But the days will come when the bridegroom will have been taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.

The Patches and the Wineskins
(Matthew 9:16-17; Luke 5:36-39)

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on old clothing. Otherwise the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear takes place.

22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine will be destroyed—and the wineskins. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”b

The Lord of the Sabbath
(1 Samuel 21:1-9; Matthew 12:1-8; Luke 6:1-5)

23And it came to pass, He is passing through the grainfields on the Sabbaths, and His disciples began to make their way, plucking the heads of grain. 24And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Behold, why do they that which is unlawful on the Sabbaths?”

25And He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need, and he and those with him hungered— 26how he entered into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the loaves of the presentation, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests—and he even gave to those being with him?”

27And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made on account of the man, and not the man on account of the Sabbath. 28So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
