Jonah’s Prayer

1Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish:a

2I called to the Lord in my distress,a

and he answered me.

I cried out for help from deep insideA Sheol;b

you heard my voice.c

3When you threw me into the depths,a

into the heart of the seas,b

the currentA overcame me.

All your breakers and your billows swept over me.c

4And I said, “I have been banisheda

from your sight,b

yet I will lookA once more

toward your holy temple.”c

5The water engulfed me up to the neck;a a

the watery depths overcame me;

seaweed was wrapped around my head.b

6I sank to the foundations of the mountains,a

the earth’s gates shut behind me forever!b

Then you raised my lifec from the Pit, Lord my God!d

7As my life was fading away,a

I remembered the Lord,b

and my prayer came to you,c

to your holy temple.d

8Those who cherish worthless idolsa

abandon their faithful love,b

9but as for me, I will sacrificea to you

with a voice of thanksgiving.b

I will fulfillc what I have vowed.

SalvationA belongs to the Lord.d

10Then the Lord commanded the fish,a and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
