Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger
(Psalm 38:1–22)

1For the one directing. With stringed instruments according to Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

1 O YHWH, in Your anger do not rebuke me,

and do not discipline me in Your rage.

2Be gracious to me, O YHWH, for I am weak;

heal me, O YHWH, for my bones are disturbed.

3And my soul is disturbed greatly;

and You, O YHWH, until when?

4Return, O YHWH, draw out my soul;

save me for the sake of Your loving devotion.

5For in death is no remembrance of You;

in Sheol, who can give thanks to You?

6I have grown weary in my sighing;

I cause my bed to swim through all the night;

with my tears I melt my couch.

7My eye has wasted away from grief;

it grows old because of all afflicting me.

8Turn away from me, all workers of iniquity,

for YHWH has heard the voice of my weeping.

9YHWH has heard my supplication;

YHWH has received my prayer.

10Let all my enemies be ashamed and disturbed greatly;

let them turn back and be ashamed in an instant.

Footnotes:

1 Sheminith is probably a musical term; here and in 1 Chronicles 15:21 and Psalm 12:1.
