Habakkuk 2
The LORD Answers Habakkuk
The Oracle's Revelation: The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

Habakkuk 2 serves as a powerful reminder that even when the world seems to be in chaos and wickedness appears to reign, God's justice is inevitable. The apparent success of the wicked is temporary and their downfall assured. It reinforces the crucial message that "the righteous will live by his faith" (Habakkuk 2:4). It encourages us to trust God's timing, remain patient, and have faith in His righteous judgment.

Awaiting God's Response (Verses 1-3)

Habakkuk positions himself to listen to God's response. God assures him that the revelation will certainly come, even if it appears delayed. The righteous, God says, will live by their faith.

Five Woes against the Wicked (Verses 4-20)

The chapter then outlines five woes, specific to the wrongdoers. The first woe (verses 6-8) is against those who increase their wealth through unjust means, the second woe (verses 9-11) is against those who build their house by unjust gain, the third woe (verses 12-14) is against those who build a city with bloodshed, the fourth woe (verses 15-17) is against those who bring ruin to their neighbors, and the fifth woe (verses 18-20) is against idolaters. Each woe ends with the surety of God's judgment and the promise of eventual justice.

Habakkuk Chapter 2 presents the prophet's intense dialogue with God regarding the apparent injustice in the world. He is grappling with the Babylonian threat and the apparent triumph of wickedness over righteousness. As Habakkuk waits for an answer, God assures him that though justice may be delayed, it will not be denied.
