4Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but all from the same Spirit. 5And there are different kinds of service, but we all serve the same Lord. 6And there are different kinds of work, but in all those kinds of work, and those that do them, the same God is at work. 7These gifts of the Spirit are given to each of us for the good of all. 8To one, the Spirit might give the word of wisdom; to another, the word of knowledge; 9To another, faith; to another, the gifts of healing; 10To another, power to work miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, discerning between spirits; to another, various kinds of tongues; to another, the interpretation of various tongues, all gifts by (or from) the same Spirit. 11But all these are the work of the very same Spirit, distributed to each person, just as He determines.

12For just as the body is one, but has many members (parts), and all the parts of that one body, though many and different, are still one body; so also is the body of Christ. 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit to form one body, whether we are Jews or Gentiles, slave or free; we were all made to share the same Spirit.

14Even so, the body is not made of one part, but many. 15If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not the hand, I am not part of the body’; would that cause it to no longer be part of the body? 16Or if the ear should say, “Because I am not the eye, I am not part of the body”; would that cause it to no longer be part of the body? 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were for hearing, where would the sense smelling be? 18But in fact God has placed the various parts, every one of them, in the body, as it has pleased Him. 19And if they were all one part, what kind of body would that be? 20But as it is, there are many parts, but only one body. 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’; nor the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you’. 22In fact, those parts of the body, that seem to be more feeble, or less important, are essential; 23And those parts of the body, which we think are less honorable, we treat with special honor; and our parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty. 24For our presentable parts have no need for special treatment; but God has put the body together such that more honor is afforded to those parts that lacked it, 25So that there should be no schism or disharmony in the body; but that its parts should have equal concern one for another. 26And when one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; or one part is honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

27Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a part of it. 28And God has set or placed certain ‘parts’ in the church with special ministries: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then miracles, the gifts of healings, helps, guidance or oversight, and different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Or are all workers of miracles? 30Do they all have the gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31But you should earnestly seek the best gifts; and yet I will show you a more excellent way.
