1And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and camped beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines camped in Aphek. 2And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel, and when they joined battle, Israel was beaten before the Philistines; and they (the Philistines) killed of the army in the field about four thousand men. 3And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, that, when it comes among us, it may save us from our enemies.” 4So the people sent to Shiloh, to bring from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, Who dwells between the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth echoed. 6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp. 7And the Philistines were afraid; and said, “God has come into their camp”. And, “Woe unto us! For there has not been such a thing heretofore. 8Woe unto us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9Be strong, and acquit yourselves like men, you Philistines, that you do not become servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you: acquit yourselves like men, and fight”. 10And the Philistines fought, and Israel was again beaten, and every man fled into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell. 11And the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed.

12And a man of Benjamin ran out of the army, and came to Shiloh that day with his clothes torn, and dirt upon his head. 13And when he came, Eli sat upon a seat by the road watching; for his heart feared for the ark of God. And when the man entered the city, and reported it, all the city cried out. 14And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see. 16And the man said to Eli, “I am the one who and I fled today out of the army”. And Eli asked, “What happened there, my son?” 17And the messenger replied, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter of the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are also dead; and the ark of God is captured”. 18And when he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off the seat by the side of the gate, and broke his neck, and died; for he was an old and heavy man. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to delivery. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and entered labor; for her pains came upon her. 20And just before she died, the midwives said to her, “Fear not; for you have born a son”. But she answered not, nor did she regard it. 21And she named the child “Ichabod” (which means “Where is the glory?”), and said, “The glory has departed from Israel”; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for the ark of God is captured”.
