Amos 6
Easy Reader Bible: Purple Letter EditionKJP
1Woe to you who are at ease and complacent in Zion, and who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria, who are notable among the nations, to whom the people of Israel come for help! 2Go look at Calneh (Kalneh); and from there go to Hamath, the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?

3You that put off every thought of the day of disaster, but your actions only bring a reign of terror nearer; 4You that lie upon beds of ivory, and lounge upon your couches, and dine on the choice lambs of the flock, and fatted calves; 5You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and improvise for yourselves musical instruments, like David; 6 You drink wine by the bowlfuls, and anoint yourselves with the finest ointments; but care nothing about the affliction of Joseph. 7Therefore, you shall now be the first to go into captivity and exile; and your banquets shall come to an end.

8The LORD God has sworn by Himself, and says, I abhor the pride of Jacob, and detest his palaces; and so, I will deliver up the city with all that is in it. 9And if ten men remain in one house, they shall all die. 10And if a man's relative comes to take up and burn their bodies, and he asks anyone inside of the house, ‘Is there anyone else with you?’ And he shall reply, ‘No’. Then shall he say, ‘Hold your tongue! We must not mention of the name of the LORD.’

11For when the LORD has given the command, a large house will be smashed to pieces, and a little house into bits.

12Do horses run upon the rocky crags? Does one plow there (upon rocky crags) with oxen? For you have turned justice into poison, and the sweet fruit of righteousness into bitterness. 13You who brag about your conquest of Lo-debar (an insignificant sheepfold village in Judah). You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim (probably Ashteroth- Karnaim) by our own strength?” and “Have we not taken to us horns (acquired power) by our own strength?” 14But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel”, says the LORD God Almighty, and they shall oppress you all the way from Lebo Hammath to the river and valley of the Arabah.
