1The prophecy regarding Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish; for Tyre is destroyed, and left without house or harbor; from the land of Kittim (Cyprus) it is reported to them. 2Be still, you inhabitants of the coast and merchants of Sidon, who have prospered trading across the sea. 3And by sea came the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, for the revenue of Tyre; and she was the marketplace of the nations. 4Be ashamed, O Sidon, fortress of the sea; for the sea says, “I have neither labored nor given birth to sons or daughters, nor do I nourish offspring”. 5They shall be greatly pained at the report of Tyre when it reaches Egypt. 6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, you inhabitants of the coast. 7Is this your joyous city, which is from antiquity, whose feet have carried her to settle far off places? 8Who have plotted against Tyre, that bestowed crowns on cities, whose merchants and traders were princes and nobles of the earth? 9The LORD Almighty has planned to humble the pride of her splendor, and to bring into contempt all the haughty of the earth. 10Till your land like they do along the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; for you no longer have a strong harbor. 11He has stretched out His hand over the sea, He shook the kingdoms; the LORD has given a commandment against Phoenicia, the merchant city, to destroy its fortresses. 12And He said, “No more of your reveling, O you daughter of Sidon; arise, cross over to Kittim (Cyprus); but even there you shall find no rest. 13Look at the land of the Chaldeans (Babylonians); this people that are now no longer of account, since the Assyrian made it a place for creatures that dwell in the wilderness; they raised towers (siege mounds), stripped its palaces, and brought it to ruin. 14Howl, you ships of Tarshish; for your fortress is laid waste.

15At that time, Tyre shall be forgotten for seventy years, the span of one king’s life; but at the end of seventy years Tyre shall come back to life as in song of a harlot. 16Take up a harp, go about the city, you forgotten harlot; make sweet melody, sing many songs, so that you may be remembered. 17And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre, and she shall return to her lucrative commerce, and shall ply her sinful trade with all the kingdoms upon the face of the earth. 18Yet her merchandise and earnings shall be set apart for the LORD; it shall not be stored or hoarded. Her profits shall be for those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
