1Now when Pashhur, the son of Immer, the priest, who was also chief official of the Temple of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.
2Then Pashhur had Jeremiah beaten, and put him in the stocks at the upper gate of Benjamin, which was at the Temple of the LORD.
3And the next day, Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. And then Jeremiah told him, “The LORD has changed your name from Pashhur to Magor-missabib (Terror on Every Side).
4For this is what the LORD says, “Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself, and to all your friends; they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and you shall see it with your own eyes; and I will hand all Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay some of them by the sword.
5Moreover, I will deliver all the wealth of this city, all its products, and all its valuables; and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them, and carry them to Babylon.
6And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity; and you shall be exiled to Babylon, where you shall die, and be buried there, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied lies.”
7O LORD, You have deceived me, and I was misled; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed; I am ridiculed all day long, everyone mocks me.
8For when I speak, I proclaim violence and so the word of the LORD has brought me reproach and insults day after day.
9But if I say “I will not mention Him, nor speak any more in His name.” Then Your word is like a burning furnace shut up in my heart and in my bones, and I grow weary of trying to hold it in.
10For I hear rumors on every side, defaming me, and saying, “Lets denounce him.” And even my friends watch for my fall, saying, “Perhaps he will be ensnared, and we shall prevail against him, and take our revenge upon him.”
11But the LORD is with me as a mighty warrior; therefore, my persecutors shall stumble, and not prevail; they shall be greatly humiliated and not prevail. Their disgrace shall never be forgotten.
12But, O LORD of hosts, Who tests the righteous, and examines the heart and the mind, let me see Your vengeance on them; for it is to You that I have presented my cause.
13Sing unto the LORD, praise the LORD; for He has delivered the soul of the poor from the hands of evildoers.
14Cursed be the day in which I was born; let the day in which my mother bore me not be blessed.
15Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, saying, “A son is born to you”; making him very glad.
16May that man be like the cities which the LORD overthrew without pity; and let him hear terrifying battle shouts day and night,
17Because he did not kill me from the womb; or that my mother’s womb might have been my grave
