9And in the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and all those that came to Jerusalem from the cities of Judah. 10Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the book to all the people in the house of the LORD, in the room (chamber) of Gemariah, son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's Temple. 11When Micaiah, son of Gemariah, and grandson of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the LORD out of the book, 12He went down into the into the scribe's chamber in king's palace; and all the officials sat there, including Elishama, the scribe, Delaiah, son of Shemaiah, Elnathan, son of Achbor, Gemariah, son of Shaphan, Zedekiah, son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard Baruch read from the book in the hearing of the people.

14Then, all the officials sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, grandson of Shelemiah, and great-grandson of Cushi, to Baruch, to say, “Bring that scroll from which you have read in the hearing of all the people, and come”. So Baruch took the scroll in his hand, and came to them. 15And they said to him, “Sit down, and read it to us”. So, Baruch read it to them. 16When they had heard all the words, they looked at each other in fear, and said to Baruch, “We must surely tell the king of all these words”. 17And they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you come to write all these words? Did they come from Jeremiah?” 18Then Baruch answered, “He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink in the scroll”. 19Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, hide, you and Jeremiah; and let no one know where you are”. 20And they went into the court to the king, leaving the scroll in the chamber of Elishama, the scribe, and reported it all to King Jehoiakim.

21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll; and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama, the scribe. And Jehudi read from it to the king, and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month; and there was a fire burning on the hearth before him. 23And when Jehudi had read three or four columns (panels), King Jehoiakim cut it with the penknife, and threw it in the fire on the hearth, until the entire scroll was consumed in the hearth fire. 24Yet none of them showed any fear, nor did they tear their garments - not the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words. 25Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scroll; he ignored them. 26Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, son of Hammelech, and Seraiah, son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch and Jeremiah, the prophet; but the LORD had hidden them.

27Then, after King Jehoiakim had burned the scroll, with all the words that Baruch had written as dictated by Jeremiah, this word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 28“Take another scroll, and write in it all the words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim has burned. 29And you shall say to Jehoiakim, king of Judah, ‘Thus says the LORD, “You have burned that scroll and said, ‘Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and wipe from it both man and beast?’ 30Therefore, the LORD says this regarding Jehoiakim, king of Judah: “He shall have no one to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be tossed out and exposed to the heat of the day, and the frost of night. 31And I will punish him, his children, and his servants for their wickedness; and I will bring upon them, and those living in Jerusalem, and in Judah, every disaster that I have pronounced against them; because they have not listened.”’” 32So then Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to Baruch, the scribe; who wrote in it all the words dictated by Jeremiah - all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim had burned in the fire; and many similar words were also added besides them.
