John 13

1It was just before the feast of the Passover. Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2At the end of their supper, the devil had already put it in the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him. 3Jesus knew that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God, and would return to God. 4And so He rose from the table, and set aside His garments; and wrapped a towel around His waist. 5Then He poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to dry them with the towel with which He had around Him. 6When He came to Simon Peter; Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You intend to wash my feet?” 7Jesus replied, “What I am doing, you do not now understand; but you shall understand later.” 8Peter said, “No! You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus replied, “Unless I do wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9Simon Peter then said, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus replied, “He that has bathed all over only needs to wash his feet to be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11For He knew who would betray Him; that is why He said, “You are not all clean”. 12After He had washed their feet, He put His robe back on, and had sat down again, and He asked them, “Do you know you what I have done for you? 13You call MeTeacher’ and ‘Lord’; and rightly so; for that is what I am. 14If then I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet; you ought to also wash one another's feet. 15For I have set an example for you, that you should do as I have done for you. 16Very truly, I say to you, no servant is greater than his lord; nor is the messenger greater than he that sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. 18I do not say this to you all; I know whom I have chosen; but this is to fulfill the scripture, ‘He who ate bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ (Psalm 41:9) 19I am telling you now, before it happens, so that, when it does happen, you may believe that I am Who I am. 20Very truly, I tell you, that whoever receives (accepts) anyone I send, receives (accepts) Me; and whoever receives (accepts) Me, receives (accepts) Him Who sent Me.”

21When Jesus had said this, He was deeply troubled in spirit, and testified, “Very truly, I tell you, that one of you is going to betray Me.” 22Then the disciples stared at one another, wondering who He was referring to. 23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved (the writer of this Gospel, John). 24Simon Peter, therefore, motioned to him, to ask who it was that He spoke of. 25He (John), then, reclining at the table next to Jesus, asked Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26Jesus answered, “It is he, to whom I shall give a sop (piece of bread), when I have dipped it”. And when He had dipped it, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. 27And after taking the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28Now no one at the table knew why He said this to him. 29Some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had told him to buy the things they needed of for the festival; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out into the night.

31When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the time when the Son of man shall enter His glory, and God shall be glorified in Him. 32If God is glorified in Him, God shall also glorify the Son in Himself, and shall glorify Him at once. 33My children, I shall be with you just a little while longer. You shall seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, “Where I go, you cannot come”; so now I say to you. 34‘A new commandment I give to you: That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another’. 35By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

36Simon Peter asked Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but you shall follow Me later.” 37Peter asked Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake”. 38Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Very truly, I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will have denied Me three times.”
