1Now after the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked the LORD, “Who of us is to go up first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” 2And the LORD said, “Judah shall go up; I have delivered the land into their hand.” 3And Judah said to Simeon, their brothers, “Come up with us into my allotted land, to fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your allotted portion”. So Simeon went with him.

4And when Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they killed ten thousand of them in Bezek. 5And there in Bezek they found Adoni-bezek; and they fought against him, and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. 7And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings, with their thumbs and their big toes cut off, gathered scraps of food under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me”. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. 8Now the children of Judah had attacked and had captured Jerusalem, and killed its occupants with the sword, and set the city on fire.

9And afterward, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the mountain, in the Negev, and in the valley. 10And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (formerly named Kiriath-arba), and they defeated the forces of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai. 11And from there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (formerly named Kiriath-sepher.) 12And Caleb said, “I will give Achsah, my daughter, in marriage to whoever who attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher. 13And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it: and he gave to him Achsah, his daughter, in marriage. 14And when she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field: and she alighted from her donkey; and Caleb asked to her, “What can I do for you?” 15And she said to him, “Give me a blessing; for you have given me the Negev (a south land); give me also springs of water”. And so Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the south (Negev) of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17And Judah went with Simeon, his brother, and they slew the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. 18Also Judah took Gaza with its borders, and Ashkelon with its borders, and Ekron with its borders. 19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. 20And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses said; and he expelled from there the three sons of Anak. 21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites, who inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them. 23And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (the city formerly known as Luz.) 24And the spies saw a man come out of the city, and they said to him, “Show us the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you”. 25And he showed them the entrance into the city, they killed everyone in the city with the sword, except the man and all his family. 26And then the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.

27But Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of the cities of Beth-sheannd, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam and Megiddo and the villages surrounding those cities; because the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 28And later, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

29Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among them in Gezer.

30Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.

31Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, of Ahlab, of Achzib, of Helbah, of Aphik, nor of Rehob; 32But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they failed to drive them out.

33 Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject of forced labor.

34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain; for they would not allow them to come down to the valley: 35But the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subjects of forced labor.

36And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
