Psalm 31

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1In You, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed; save me in Your righteousness. 2Incline Your ear to me; deliver me quickly. Be my strong rock of defense that saves me. 3Since You are my rock and my only defense; lead and protect me for Your name's sake. 4Free me from the trap that they secretly set for me; for You are my defender. 5Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. 6I have hated them who trust in and serve vain idols; but I trust in the You, LORD. 7I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy; for You have considered my trouble; You have known me in adversities, 8And have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a safe place.

9Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; my eye is overwhelmed with grief, as is my body and soul. 10For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing; my strength fails, and my bones waste away because of my sin. 11I am despised by all my enemies, but especially among my neighbors, and was dreaded by my acquaintances; they who saw me outside avoided me. 12I am forgotten as though I were dead; like broken pottery. 13For I have heard their whispered slander; fear was on every side, as they took schemed for a way to take away my life.

14But I trusted in You, O LORD; I said, “You are my God.” 15My times are in Your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and those who persecute me. 16Let Your face shine upon Your servant; save me for Your mercies' sake. 17Do not let me be disappointed, O LORD; when I call upon You; but let the wicked be ashamed, and be silent in the grave. 18Let their lying lips be put to silence, which speak with arrogance and contempt against the righteous.

19Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for them who reverence You; which You have prepared for them who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men! 20You shall shelter them in Your presence, safe from the prideful schemes of man, and from their vicious slander. 21Blessed be the LORD; for He has shown me His marvelous kindness when under siege in a city. 22For in my panic, I said, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”; nevertheless, You heard my cries to You for help. 23O love the LORD, all you His faithful people; for the LORD preserves the faithful, and fully repays those who act arrogantly. 24Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you that hope in the LORD.
