To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?]

1Save me, O God, by Your name, and judge and defend me by Your power. 2Hear my prayer, O God; give consideration to my plea. 3For strangers have come against me, who seek to kill me, and have no regard for You, O God. Selah.

4But You, LORD, are my helper; and the sustainer of my soul. 5You will repay my enemies their evil deeds. Annihilate them in Your truth. 6I will gladly offer sacrifice unto You; I will praise Your great name, O LORD. 7For You have delivered me out of all trouble; and I have seen the defeat of my enemies.

A Psalm of David

The circumstances David faced when this psalm was written is not known for certain. One possibility that could explain it is when his own son, Absalom, and then his close friend and advisor, Ahithophel, rose against and betrayed him, as well as Joab, David’s commander of the army, who killed Absalom, despite David’s order no to harm him, all recorded in 2 Samuel 15-17. So David was well acquainted with betrayal by those he trusted. His words in Psalm 55 seem very understandable when viewed against that scenario. And of course, a parallel circumstance is our LORD’s betrayal by Judas Iscariot.
