Matthew 4
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted (tested) by the devil. 2And having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3And the one tempting having approached, he said to Him, If You are the Son of God, speak, so that these stones might become loaves of bread. 4And answering, He said, It has been written, Man shall not live upon bread alone, but upon every saying (rhemati) coming out through the mouth of God.

Then the devil takes Him unto the holy city and stands Him upon the pinnacle (edge of the wing, latin-pinnaculum-pinnacle) of the temple,

And says to Him, If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down below: for it has been written, He will give His angels orders (command, charge) concerning you, and they will bear you up upon their hands, lest ever you strike your foot against (to) a stone.

Jesus said to him, Again it has been written, You shall not test (tempt) out the Lord your God.

Again the devil takes Him unto a very high mountain and shows (points out) to Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9And he says to Him, I will give all these things to You, if falling down, You will worship me. 10Then Jesus says to him, Go away (depart), Satan; for it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve (latreuseis-sacred service). 11Then the devil leaves Him and behold, angels came and ministered (served, diekonoun) to Him.

And having heard that John had been handed over, He withdrew into Galilee: 13And having left Nazareth, having come, He resided at (into) Capernaum which is beside the sea in the borders of Zebulun and Napthali, 14So that that might be fulfilled having been spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the ethnicities.

The people sitting in darkness have seen a great Light, and those sitting in the land and shadow of death, a Light has risen up on them.

From that time Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.

And walking beside the sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting (throwing) a fishing drag-net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19And He says to them, Come! after (behind) Me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20And directly having left their nets, they followed (accompanied) Him. 21And having gone on (gone forward) from there, He saw others, two brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother in the boat with Zebedee their father, adjusting their nets; and He called them. 22And directly having left the boat and their father, they followed (accompanied) Him.

And He went around in the whole Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing (therapeuon) every (all) disease (noson- chronic ailment) and every (all) disabling ailment (malakia- condition that softens, that which softens thus weakens muscles, etc.) among the people.

And the hearing of Him went out into the whole of Syria. And they brought to Him all the badly (kakos) having various diseases and oppressing torturous pains, and being demonized, and being epileptics (possibly those being lunatics- “someone controlled by the moon”, moon-ized, moonstruck, latin-lunaticos-epileptics- in latin luna means moon, like we would say possessed by a demon= this would be possessed by the moon), and paralytics; and He healed (etherapeusen) them. 25And great crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
