If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal.1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love, I gain nothing.3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth.6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
but when the perfect comes, the partial passes away.10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside childish ways.11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
