For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence."1For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.”
I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good, And my sorrow grew worse.2I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
"LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.4“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
"Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.5You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah
"Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.6Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.
"And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.7And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
"Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach of the foolish.8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.
"I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.9I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
"Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am perishing.10Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand.
"With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. Selah.11You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah
"Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner like all my fathers.12Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
"Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again Before I depart and am no more."13Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”
