Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,1Διὸ ἀφέντες τὸν τῆς ἀρχῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ λόγον ἐπὶ τὴν τελειότητα φερώμεθα μὴ πάλιν θεμέλιον καταβαλλόμενοι μετανοίας ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων καὶ πίστεως ἐπὶ Θεόν
of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.2βαπτισμῶν διδαχὴν ἐπιθέσεώς τε χειρῶν ἀναστάσεώς ‹τε› νεκρῶν καὶ κρίματος αἰωνίου
And this we will do if God permits.3καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσομεν ἐάνπερ ἐπιτρέπῃ Θεός
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,4Ἀδύνατον γὰρ τοὺς ἅπαξ φωτισθέντας γευσαμένους τε τῆς δωρεᾶς τῆς ἐπουρανίου καὶ μετόχους γενηθέντας Πνεύματος Ἁγίου
and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,5καὶ καλὸν γευσαμένους Θεοῦ ῥῆμα δυνάμεις τε μέλλοντος αἰῶνος
if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.6καὶ παραπεσόντας πάλιν ἀνακαινίζειν εἰς μετάνοιαν ἀνασταυροῦντας ἑαυτοῖς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ παραδειγματίζοντας
For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God;7Γῆ γὰρ πιοῦσα τὸν ἐπ’ αὐτῆς ἐρχόμενον πολλάκις ὑετόν καὶ τίκτουσα βοτάνην εὔθετον ἐκείνοις δι’ οὓς καὶ γεωργεῖται μεταλαμβάνει εὐλογίας ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ
but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.8ἐκφέρουσα δὲ ἀκάνθας καὶ τριβόλους ἀδόκιμος καὶ κατάρας ἐγγύς ἧς τὸ τέλος εἰς καῦσιν
But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner.9Πεπείσμεθα δὲ περὶ ὑμῶν ἀγαπητοί τὰ κρείσσονα καὶ ἐχόμενα σωτηρίας εἰ καὶ οὕτως λαλοῦμεν
For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.10οὐ γὰρ ἄδικος Θεὸς ἐπιλαθέσθαι τοῦ ἔργου ὑμῶν καὶ τῆς ἀγάπης ἧς ἐνεδείξασθε εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ διακονήσαντες τοῖς ἁγίοις καὶ διακονοῦντες
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end,11Ἐπιθυμοῦμεν δὲ ἕκαστον ὑμῶν τὴν αὐτὴν ἐνδείκνυσθαι σπουδὴν πρὸς τὴν πληροφορίαν τῆς ἐλπίδος ἄχρι τέλους
that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.12ἵνα μὴ νωθροὶ γένησθε μιμηταὶ δὲ τῶν διὰ πίστεως καὶ μακροθυμίας κληρονομούντων τὰς ἐπαγγελίας
For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself,13Τῷ γὰρ Ἀβραὰμ ἐπαγγειλάμενος Θεός ἐπεὶ κατ’ οὐδενὸς εἶχεν μείζονος ὀμόσαι ὤμοσεν καθ’ ἑαυτοῦ
saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.”14λέγων Εἰ μὴν εὐλογῶν εὐλογήσω σε καὶ πληθύνων πληθυνῶ σε
And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.15καὶ οὕτως μακροθυμήσας ἐπέτυχεν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας
For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.16Ἄνθρωποι γὰρ κατὰ τοῦ μείζονος ὀμνύουσιν καὶ πάσης αὐτοῖς ἀντιλογίας πέρας εἰς βεβαίωσιν ὅρκος
Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,17ἐν περισσότερον βουλόμενος Θεὸς ἐπιδεῖξαι τοῖς κληρονόμοις τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τὸ ἀμετάθετον τῆς βουλῆς αὐτοῦ ἐμεσίτευσεν ὅρκῳ
that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.18ἵνα διὰ δύο πραγμάτων ἀμεταθέτων ἐν οἷς ἀδύνατον ψεύσασθαι [τὸν] Θεόν ἰσχυρὰν παράκλησιν ἔχωμεν οἱ καταφυγόντες κρατῆσαι τῆς προκειμένης ἐλπίδος
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,19ἣν ὡς ἄγκυραν ἔχομεν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀσφαλῆ τε καὶ βεβαίαν καὶ εἰσερχομένην εἰς τὸ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος
where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.20ὅπου πρόδρομος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν εἰσῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ ἀρχιερεὺς γενόμενος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
