Exodus 11

The unfortunate sequencing of some of these verses and an intervening chapter break make it hard to understand the events of this final confrontation between Moses and Pharoah. In some cases, it is unclear who is being spoken to in this passage. In 10:25-26, Moses tells Pharoah that their cattle must go with them. Then there is a heated exchange between Pharoah and Moses (10:28-29). An intervening chapter break and a parenthetical insertion (11:1-3) adds to the reader’s confusion. It informs Bible readers that the LORD had previously informed Moses of His 10th and last plague, which would cause Pharoah to drive God’s people out; and told them to ask their neighbors for jewels in anticipation of their hastened exodus. Then 11:4-8 resumes the interrupted final dialog between Moses and Pharoah, where Moses tells Pharoah the nature of this last plague, foretells its impact and effect; and is told to “Get Out!!” and Moses leaves Pharoah’s presence in great anger.

1The LORD had previously said to Moses, I will bring one more plague upon Pharaoh, and Egypt. After that, he will let you leave; and when he does, he shall surely drive you out from here. 2Speak now to the people, and let everyone ask jewels of silver and gold from their neighbor. 3And the LORD gave the people favor with the Egyptians. And Moses was very highly regarded in the land of Egypt by Pharaoh's officials, and by the Egyptian people. 4And Moses said, “Thus says the LORD, About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5And all the firstborn in Egypt shall die - from the firstborn of Pharaoh upon his throne, to the firstborn of the maidservant behind the mill; as well as all the firstborn of beasts. 6And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, wailing like there has never been, nor shall ever be again. 7But as for the children of Israel, not even a dog shall bark to disturb their peace; so that you will know how the LORD draws a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel. 8And all of your officers shall come, bowing to me (Moses), and saying, ‘Get out, you and all the people that follow you’; and after that I will go out.” And Moses went out from Pharaoh in a great anger. 9And the LORD said to Moses, Pharaoh shall not listen to you, so that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt. 10And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the Israelites leave his land.
