1In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, Jeremiah, the prophet, spoke this word to Baruch, son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a scroll as dictated by Jeremiah: 1 “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: 3‘You said, “Woe is me now! For the LORD has added grief to my sorrow. I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.”’ 4Baruch, the LORD says this to you: “What I have built, I will break down; and what I have planted I will uproot, throughout the whole earth. 5And should you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I will bring disaster upon all people, but your life will I give to you for a reward, wherever you go.”
