1Judah’s allotment extended south to the territory of Edom, to the desert of Zin at its southernmost point. 2And their southern border ran from the shore of the Salt (Dead) Sea, from the bay that faces southward; 3And it went out to the south side of the ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended on the south side to Kadesh-barnea, passed along to Hezron, up to Adar, and curved around to Karka. 4From there it passed toward Azmon, and went out to the Brook (Wadi) of Egypt; and the end of that border was at the Mediterranean Sea. This was their southern border. 5And the east border was from the Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And their northern boundary began at the bay of the Dead Sea at the mouth of the Jordan. 6And it went up to Beth-hoglah, and passed north of Beth-arabah to the stone of Bohan, son of Reuben. 7And it continued toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and turned north toward Gilgal, across the slopes of Adummim, which is on the south side of the ravine; and then passed toward the waters of En-shemesh, and the end of it was at En-rogel; 8And the border ran up the Valley of the Ben Hinnom along the south slope of the Jebusite city, which is Jerusalem; and then climbed to the top of the mountain above the Hinnom Valley westward, at the end of the valley of the giants (Rephim) northward; 9And the boundary extended from the top of the hill to the spring of water at Nephtoah, and went out to the towns of Mount Ephron; and then extended to Baalah, which is Kiriath-jearim; 10Then the border curved west from Baalah to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and continued on to Timnah; 11And then it went to the north slope of Ekron; and it extended to Shikkeron, and along to Mount Baalah, and went on to Jabneel; and the border ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 12And the western border was the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. This is the boundary for the descendants of Judah according to their families. 13And Joshua gave to Caleb, son of Jephunneh, a portion among the descendants of Judah, according to the commandment from the LORD - the city of Arba, the father of Anak, which is now Hebron. 14And Caleb drove the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, out of there. 15And he marched from there against the inhabitants of Debir; which had been named Kiriath-sepher. 16And Caleb said, “I will give Achsah, my daughter, in marriage to whomever attacks and takes Kiriath-sepher.” 17And Othniel, son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it, and Caleb gave his daughter, Achsah, to him in marriage. 18And as she came and alighted from her donkey, she prompted Othniel to ask her father for a field. And Caleb asked, “What would you like?” 19And she answered, “Since you have given me the south land, give me also its springs of water.” And he gave her both the upper the lower springs. 20This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah according to its clans: 21The southernmost cities of Judah along the border of Edom in the Negev were: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, 22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (Hazor), 26Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-palet, 28Hazar-shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah, 29Baalah, Iim (Ijim or Iyim), Ezem, 30Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, 31Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon; all twenty-nine cities, with their villages. 33And in the western foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34Zanoah, En-gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, 36Shaarim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities with their villages. 37Also included were Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-gad, 38Dilean, Mizpah, Joktheel, 39Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, 40Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish, 41Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities with their villages. 42Besides these were Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah - nine cities with their villages. 45And it also included Ekron, with her towns and villages; 46And westward from Ekron to the sea, all that lay near Ashdod, with its villages. 47Ashdod with its towns and villages, Gaza with its towns and villages, to the Brook of Egypt, and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. 48And in the hill country, Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, 49Dannah, Kiriath-sannah, which is Debir, 50Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51Goshen, Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages. 52Also Arab, Dumah, Eshan, 53Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah, 54Humtah, Kiriath-arba, which is Hebron, and Zior; nine cities with their villages. 55Besides Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Jutah, 56Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57Kain (Cain), Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities with their villages. 58In addition to Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor, 59Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages. 60Also Kiriath-baal, which is Kiriath-jearim, and Rabbah; two cities with their villages. 61In the wilderness, there were Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah, 62Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En-gedi; six cities with their villages. 63The men of Judah did not drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and to this day, the Jebusites dwell with the descendants of Judah at Jerusalem. The “Brook of Egypt” of verses 4 and 47 appears to have been the Shihor (river, wadi, or brook of Joshua 13:3, and is likely one of the eastern branches of the Nile, as it approaches the Mediterranean Sea, perhaps the Pelusiac or the Bubastite branch.
