The Value of Human Life
Isaiah 13:12
I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

Probably it is not true that human life is held more dear in times of war; but some sense of the value of the lives sacrificed is apt to dawn upon the people after the war is over, when the nation finds its resources wasted, and the people sit desolate in their homes, waiting for the strong and the brave who shall return no more. It is a hard school in which to learn this lesson of the preciousness of man; but if it can be learned in no other way it may well be enforced upon the world, even by such fiery tuition.

(W. Gladden, D. D.)
