Seeing the Angels
Luke 1:11
And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

According to Holy Scripture, we are surrounded by angels (2 Kings 6:17; Psalm 34:7), whom God employs to defend us; but in our ordinary condition we have not the perception necessary to make us aware of their presence. For this we need a peculiar state of receptivity. That was the state of Zacharias at this time. He had been prepared for it by the sanctity of the place, by the solemnity of the service which he was about to fulfil, by his lively sympathy with those who prayed for national deliverance, and finally by the sense of his own domestic trial.

(Prof. Godet.)
