Debt
Romans 13:8
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.

I. IS A COMMON AND SERIOUS EVIL.

1. It robs the creditor of his right, and often involves him in serious perplexity and trouble.

2. It robs the debtor of his independence, and not unfrequently of his moral principle.

II. IS, WHEN VOLUNTARILY INCURRED, A BREACH OF CHRISTIAN CONSISTENCY. It implies —

1. A defective morality.

2. A want of love to our neighbour.

3. A blinded conscience.

III. SHOULD BE CAREFULLY AVOIDED.

1. By living within our income.

2. By cutting off all unnecessary expenses.

3. By incurring no liabilities which we have not a reasonable prospect of meeting.

4. By the utmost economy.
