The Corinthians had been influenced by standards that prized impressive speech, public reputation, social status, and physical presence. Some opponents judged Paul as weak because his personal appearance and speaking style did not match their expectations (2 Corinthians 10:10). God’s judgment reaches beyond visible qualities to the heart, as Samuel learned when David was chosen as king (1 Samuel 16:7). Spiritual integrity, faithfulness to Christ, and obedience to His word cannot be measured by worldly standards.

If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ,

Claims of special attachment to Christ had contributed to division and pride in Corinth. Believers were identifying themselves with favored human leaders rather than recognizing that Christ alone is Lord of the church (1 Corinthians 1:12–13). Genuine confidence in belonging to Christ produces humility, since every believer stands before Him by grace and is accountable to Him.

Paul and his fellow workers were not outsiders seeking authority for themselves; they were servants commissioned by the risen Christ to build up His church. All who truly belong to Christ share one Lord, one faith, and one identity as members of His body.
