For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed,

Paul warns that the identity and work of Jesus cannot be altered without corrupting the gospel. The apostles proclaimed the crucified and risen Son of God, the promised Messiah, fully God and fully man, whose death atoned for sin and whose resurrection secures eternal life for all who believe. Teachers who presented Jesus merely as a moral example, denied His true humanity or deity, or made obedience to the Mosaic law necessary for salvation offered a counterfeit Christ. The Judaizers troubled Gentile churches by adding circumcision and law-keeping to faith, while later Gnostic errors denied essential truths concerning Christ’s incarnation and saving work. Fidelity to Jesus requires receiving Him as He revealed Himself through the apostolic witness.

Believers had received the Holy Spirit through faith in Christ, not through human effort or religious achievement. The Spirit confirms adoption as God’s children, unites believers to Christ, produces holiness, and bears witness to the truth of the gospel. Spiritual experiences, persuasive leaders, and claims of supernatural insight must be tested by their agreement with God’s revealed truth. Deceptive spirits can imitate religious zeal while directing people away from Christ’s lordship and the sufficiency of His sacrifice. John likewise commands believers to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone into the world.

The gospel accepted by the Corinthians announced salvation by God’s grace through faith in the crucified and risen Christ. It called sinners to repentance and faith, rested entirely on Christ’s completed work, and produced a new life of obedience through the Spirit. Any message that adds human merit, ritual observance, secret knowledge, worldly wisdom, or moral license to that foundation abandons the gospel rather than improving it. Paul had already declared that anyone preaching a contrary gospel stood under God’s judgment, even if the messenger appeared impressive or authoritative.

The Corinthians had shown dangerous tolerance toward teachers who undermined apostolic truth. Their attraction to eloquence, outward credentials, and spiritual claims exposed immaturity and made them vulnerable to manipulation. Love for others does not require acceptance of teaching that dishonors Christ or leads believers away from grace. Christian discernment holds firmly to the message delivered by the apostles and refuses every doctrine that replaces, diminishes, or distorts the Lord Jesus and His gospel.
