Ezekiel does not teach that anyone earns salvation through outward deeds; rather, righteous conduct reveals a heart that has turned to God. For the faithful remnant in exile, this promise gave hope that obedience still mattered even amid the collapse of Judah. In Christ, believers receive the righteousness they could never establish for themselves, and that gift produces a life increasingly marked by obedience. Pro 11:18 The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows… and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him. No sinner escapes God’s holy judgment by appealing to ancestry, community, or the failures of others. Wickedness carries its own guilt and consequence unless the sinner turns from it. Yet the surrounding passage repeatedly reveals God’s mercy: He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but calls them to turn and live. That mercy reaches its fullest expression in Jesus Christ, who bore sin’s judgment so that all who repent and believe may receive forgiveness and eternal life.
