Isaiah 48
NET Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleInternational Standard Version
Listen to this, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name 'Israel,' and are descended from Judah, who take oaths in the name of the LORD, and invoke the God of Israel--but not in an honest and just manner. 1"Listen to this, house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, and who have come forth from Judah's loins; you who swear oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel— but not in truth, nor in good faith.
Indeed, they live in the holy city; they trust in the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD who commands armies. 2For they name themselves after the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel— the LORD of the Heavenly Armies is his name.
"I announced events beforehand, I issued the decrees and made the predictions; suddenly I acted and they came to pass. 3I foretold the former things long ago; it went forth from my mouth, and I disclosed them; Suddenly, I acted, and they came to pass.
I did this because I know how stubborn you are. Your neck muscles are like iron and your forehead like bronze. 4Because I knew that you are obstinate, and because your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead is bronze,
I announced them to you beforehand; before they happened, I predicted them for you, so you could never say, 'My image did these things, my idol, my cast image, decreed them.' 5I told you these things long ago; I announced them to you before they happened so that you couldn't say, 'My idol did them; my carved image or metal idol ordained them.'
You have heard; now look at all the evidence! Will you not admit that what I say is true? From this point on I am announcing to you new events that are previously unrevealed and you do not know about. 6"You have heard—now look at them all! How can you not admit them? From now on, I'll make you hear new things, hidden things that you have not known.
Now they come into being, not in the past; before today you did not hear about them, so you could not say, 'Yes, I know about them.' 7They are created now, and not long ago; you didn't hear them before today, so you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew them.'
You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth. 8And neither had you heard, nor did you understand, nor did you open your ear long ago. Indeed, I knew that you would act very deceitfully, and they would call you a rebel from birth.
For the sake of my reputation I hold back my anger; for the sake of my prestige I restrain myself from destroying you. 9I defer my anger for my name's sake, and as my first act I'm restraining it for you, so as not to cut you off.
Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have purified you in the furnace of misery. 10Look, I have refined you, but not like silver; I have purified you in the furnace of affliction.
For my sake alone I will act, for how can I allow my name to be defiled? I will not share my glory with anyone else! 11For my own sake—Yes, for my own sake!—I'm doing it; indeed, how can I be profaned? Furthermore, I won't give my glory to another."
Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I summoned! I am the one; I am present at the very beginning and at the very end. 12"Listen to these things, Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called. I am the One: I am the first, I am even the last.
Yes, my hand founded the earth; my right hand spread out the sky. I summon them; they stand together. 13Moreover, my hands laid the earth's foundation, and my right hand spread out the heavens. I call out to them, and they stand up together.
All of you, gather together and listen! Who among them announced these things? The LORD's ally will carry out his desire against Babylon; he will exert his power against the Babylonians. 14Let all of them come together and listen: Who is there among them that could declare these things? "The LORD loves me, and he will accomplish my purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Chaldeans.
I, I have spoken--yes, I have summoned him; I lead him and he will succeed. 15I—Yes, I!—have spoken; indeed, I've called and I've brought him, and he will make his path successful.
Approach me! Listen to this! From the very first I have not spoken in secret; when it happens, I am there." So now, the sovereign LORD has sent me, accompanied by his spirit. 16Draw near to me, and listen to this: 'From the beginning I haven't spoken in secret; at the time it happened, I was there.' And now the LORD God, and his Spirit, has sent me.
This is what the LORD, your protector, says, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you how to succeed, who leads you in the way you should go. 17"This is what the LORD says, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you how to succeed, who directs you in the path by which you should go.
If only you had obeyed my commandments, prosperity would have flowed to you like a river, deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea. 18Now if only you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your success like the waves of the sea.
Your descendants would have been as numerous as sand, and your children like its granules. Their name would not have been cut off and eliminated from my presence. 19Your descendants would've been like the sand, and your offspring like its numberless grains. Their name wouldn't have been cut off or annihilated out of my reach.
Leave Babylon! Flee from the Babylonians! Announce it with a shout of joy! Make this known! Proclaim it throughout the earth! Say, 'The LORD protects his servant Jacob. 20"Go out from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans! With happy shouts, announce and proclaim this to the ends of the earth: Say, 'The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob!'
They do not thirst as he leads them through dry regions; he makes water flow out of a rock for them; he splits open a rock and water flows out.' 21They didn't thirst when he led him through the desolate places. He made water gush from a rock for them; he split open the rock, and water gushed out.
There will be no prosperity for the wicked," says the LORD. 22"But there is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
