The Capture of Rabbah 1In the spring \At the turn of the year/,a at the time when kings march out to war, Joab (YHWH is father) led out the army and ravaged the land of the Ammonites (tribal). He came to Rabbah (great) and besieged it, but David (beloved) remained in Jerusalem (city of peace). And Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it. 2Then David (beloved) took the crown from the head of their king (from the head of Milcom).b It was found to weigh a talent of gold <75.4 lb / 34.2 kg>c and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of plunder from the city. 3David brought out the people who were there and put them to work (cut them)d with saws, iron picks, and axes. And he (beloved) did the same to all the Ammonite (tribal) cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem (city of peace). Battles against the Philistines 4Some time later, war broke out with the Philistines (immigrants) at Gezer (portion). At that time Sibbecai (weaver) the Hushathite killed Sippai (Saph),e a descendant of the Rephaim (the giants),f and the Philistines were subdued. 5Once again there was a battle with the Philistines (immigrants), and Elhanan (God has been gracious) son of Jair (forested) killed Lahmi (my bread) the brotherg of Goliath (splendor) the Gittite (belonging to Gath), the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 6And there was also a battle at Gath (winepress), where there was a man of great stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha, 7and when he taunted Israel (he wrestles with God), Jonathan (YHWH has given) the son of David’s (beloved) brother Shimei (fame) killed him. 8So these descendants of Rapha in Gath (winepress) fell at the hands of David (beloved) and his servants.
