Twenty-Four Divisions of Musicians

1Additionally, David (beloved) and the commanders of the army set apart some of the sons of Asaph (gatherer), Heman (faithful), and Jeduthun (praising) to prophesy with the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. The following is the list of the men who performed this service:

2From the sons of Asaph (gatherer): Zaccur (mindful), Joseph (YHWH has added), Nethaniah (given of YHWH), and Asarelah (God holds). These sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.

3(praising) From the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah (YHWH is great), Zeri (built), Jeshaiah, Shimei,a Hashabiah (YHWH has considered), and Mattithiah (gift of YHWH)—six in all—under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with the harp, giving thanks and praise to the LORD {YHWH}.

4(faithful) From the sons of Heman: Bukkiah (YHWH has emptied), Mattaniah (gift of YHWH), Uzziel (my strength is God), Shebuel (Shubael),b Jerimoth (Jeremoth),c Hananiah (God has favored), Hanani (gracious), Eliathah (God has come), Giddalti (I make great), Romamti-ezer (I have exalted the Helper), Joshbekashah (seated in hardness), Mallothi (I have uttered), Hothir (abundance), and Mahazioth (visions). 5All these sons of Heman (faithful) the king’s seer were given him through the promises of God {Elohim} to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

6All these were under the direction of their fathers for the music of the house of the LORD {YHWH} with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God {Elohim}.

Asaph (gatherer), Jeduthun (praising), and Heman (faithful) were under the direction of the king. 7Together with their relatives, who were all trained and skillful in the songs of the LORD {YHWH}, they numbered 288. 8They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.

9The first lot, which was for Asaph (gatherer), fell to Joseph, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;d

the second to Gedaliah (YHWH is great), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

10the third to Zaccur (mindful), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

11the fourth to Izri (Zeri),e his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

12the fifth to Nethaniah (given of YHWH), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

13the sixth to Bukkiah (YHWH has emptied), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

14the seventh to Jesarelah (Asarelah),f his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

15the eighth to Jeshaiah (YHWH has saved), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

16the ninth to Mattaniah (gift of YHWH), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

17the tenth to Shimei (renowned), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

18the eleventh to Azarel (Uzziel),g his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

19the twelfth to Hashabiah (YHWH has considered), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

20the thirteenth to Shubael (captive of God), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

21the fourteenth to Mattithiah (gift of YHWH), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

22the fifteenth to Jeremoth (Jerimoth),h his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

23the sixteenth to Hananiah (God has favored), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

24the seventeenth to Joshbekashah (seated in hardness), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

25the eighteenth to Hanani (gracious), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

26the nineteenth to Mallothi (I have uttered), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

27the twentieth to Eliathah (God has come), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

28the twenty-first to Hothir (abundance), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

29the twenty-second to Giddalti (I make great), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

30the twenty-third to Mahazioth (visions), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;

31and the twenty-fourth to Romamti-ezer (I have exalted the Helper), his sons, and his brothers—12 in all.
