Jesus the True Vine
(Isaiah 27:1–13)

1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch not bearing fruit in Me, He takes it away; and every one bearing fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3Already you⁺ are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you⁺. 4Remain in Me, and I in you⁺. As the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither you⁺, unless you⁺ remain in Me.

5I am the vine; you⁺ are the branches. The one remaining in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit. For apart from Me you⁺ are able to do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown out like the branch and is dried up (and they gather them and cast them into the fire) and it is burned. 7If you⁺ remain in Me and My words remain in you⁺, you⁺ shall ask whatever you⁺ wish, and to you⁺ it will come to pass. 8In this My Father is glorified, that you⁺ should bear much fruit, and you⁺ shall be My disciples.

No Greater Love

9As the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you⁺. Remain in My love. 10If you⁺ keep My commandments, you⁺ will abide in My love, as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11These things I have spoken to you⁺ so that My joy may be in you⁺ and your⁺ joy may be full.

12This is My commandment, that you⁺ should love one another as I have loved you⁺. 13Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends.

14You⁺ are My friends if you⁺ do what I command you⁺. 15No longer do I call you⁺ servants, because the servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you⁺ friends, because all things that I heard from My Father, I have made known to you⁺. 16You⁺ did not choose Me, but I chose you⁺, and I appointed you⁺ so that you⁺ should go and bear fruit, and your⁺ fruit should remain, so that whatever you⁺ might ask the Father in My name, He may give you⁺. 17These things I command you⁺, that you⁺ love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18If the world hates you⁺, you⁺ know that it has hated Me before you⁺. 19If you⁺ were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you⁺ are not of the world, but I chose you⁺ out of the world, on account of this, the world hates you⁺.

20Remember the word that I said to you⁺: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you⁺; if they kept My word, they will keep yours⁺ also. 21But they will do all these things against you⁺ on account of My name, because they do not know the One having sent Me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

23The one hating Me hates My Father also. 24If I had not done among them the works that no other has done, they would not have had sin; but now they have both seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25But this is so that the word having been written in their Law may be fulfilled: ‘They hated Me without cause.’

26When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you⁺ from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes forth from the Father, He will testify about Me. 27And you⁺ also testify, because you⁺ are with Me from the beginning.
