ContextStephen's Address to the Sanhedrin
…40Saying to Aaron: Make us gods to go before us. For as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him. 41And they made a calf in those days and offered sacrifices to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42And God turned and gave them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the books of the prophets: Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years, in the desert, O house of Israel?…
And when he had received them, he fashioned them by founders' work, and made of them a molten calf. And they said: These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
And rising in the morning, they offered holocausts, and peace victims, and the people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.
They made also a calf in Horeb: and they adored the graven thing.
And the rest of the men, who were not slain by these plagues, did not do penance from the works of their hands, that they should not adore devils and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and wood, which neither can see nor hear nor walk:
