ContextThe Corruption of Zion
…22Thy silver is turned into dross: thy wine is mingled with water. 23Thy princes are faithless, companions of thieves: they all love bribes, they run after rewards. They judge not for the fatherless: and the widow's cause cometh not in to them.24Therefore saith the Lord the God of hosts, the mighty one of Israel: Ah! I will comfort myself over my adversaries: and I will be revenged of my enemies.…
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things that were concerning him.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
Neither shalt thou take bribes, which even blind the wise, and pervert the words of the just.
Thy silver is turned into dross: thy wine is mingled with water.
That justify the wicked for gifts, and take away the justice of the just from him.
To oppress the poor in judgment, and do violence to the cause of the humble of my people: that widows might be their prey, and that they might rob the fatherless.
Woe to you, apostate children, saith the Lord, that you would take counsel, and not of me: and would begin a web, and not by my spirit, that you might add sin upon sin:
I have spread forth my hands all the day to an unbelieving people, who walk in a way that is not good after their own thoughts.
They are set round about her, as keepers of fields: because she hath provoked me to wrath, saith the Lord.
They are grown gross and fat: and have most wickedly transgressed my words. They have not judged the cause of the widow, they have not managed the cause of the fatherless, and they have not judged the judgment of the poor.
Because of all the evil of the children of Israel, and of the children of Juda, which they have done, provoking me to wrath, they and their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, the men of Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a provoking house: who have eyes to see, and see not: and ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a provoking house.
Behold the princes of Israel, every one hath employed his arm in thee to shed blood.
They have abused father and mother in thee, they have oppressed the stranger in the midst of thee, they have grieved the fatherless and widow in thee.
The princes of Juda are become as they that take up the bound: I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.
All their wickedness is in Galgal, for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their devices I will cast them forth out of my house: I will love them no more, all their princes are revolters.
Because I know your manifold crimes, and your grievous sins: enemies of the just, taking bribes, and oppressing the poor in the gate.
But yet I am filled with the strength of the spirit of the Lord, with judgment and power: to declare unto Jacob his wickedness and to Israel his sin.
You that build up Sion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.
By which her rich men were filled with iniquity, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue was deceitful in their mouth.
