1When Jesus had spoken these words, He and His disciples went out over the brook, Kidron, and entered a garden. 2And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; because Jesus often resorted there with His disciples. 3The chief priests and Pharisees had given Judas a detachment of soldiers and officers and they all came there with lanterns, torches and weapons. 4Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?” 5They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth”. Jesus said, “I am He”. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6And when He said to them, “I am He”, they drew backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then He asked them again, “Who are you seeking?” And they again said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He; so, if you seek Me, let these other men go”; 9He said that to fulfil what He had spoken, “Of those You gave Me I have lost none” (17:12).

10Then Simon Peter drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, named Malchus, cutting off his right ear. 11Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath; the cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

12Then the band, its captain, and officers of the Jews, arrested and bound Jesus, 13And led Him away first to Annas; the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. 14Now Caiaphas was the one who had given the counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people. 15And Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus, and that disciple, who was known to the high priest, went into the palace of the high priest with Jesus. 16But Peter stood outside at the door. Then that other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the servant girl that kept the door, and brought Peter inside. 17Then the girl that kept the door said to Peter, “Are you not also one of this Man's disciples?” He replied, “I am not.” 18And it was cold; and the servants and officers that stood there had made a fire of coals; by which they warmed themselves; and Peter stood and warmed himself with them.

19Then the high priest asked Jesus about His disciples, and about His doctrine (teaching). 20Jesus replied, “I spoke openly to the world; I often taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always gather; and I have said nothing in secret. 21Why ask Me? Ask those who heard Me what I have said; look, they know what I said.” 22And when Jesus said this, one of the officers nearby slapped Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Is this how You answer the high priest?” 23Jesus responded, “If I have said something wrong, say what was wrong; but if I spoke the truth, why did you hit Me?” 24Then Annas had Him sent bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. And one of them said to him, “Are you not one of His disciples?” He denied it, and said, “I am not”. 26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the servant whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27Peter again denied; and then immediately, the rooster crowed.

28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman hall of judgment; and it was early morning. But the Jews, themselves, did not go into the judgment hall, to avoid becoming ceremonially defiled; and unable to eat the Passover. 29Then Pilate (the Roman governor) came out to them, and asked, “What charges do you bring against this Man?” 30They answered him, “If He were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you”. 31Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him, and judge Him according to your law.” But the Jews said to Pilate, “Only the Romans are permitted to put anyone to death”; 32This served to fulfil what Jesus had said, signifying what kind of death He would die. 33Then Pilate went back into the judgment hall, and summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Are you asking this of yourself, or have others told you this about Me?” 35“Am I a Jew?” Pilate asked, “Your own nation and the chief priests have handed You over to me. What have You done?” 36Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would fight, that I would not be arrested by the Jews; but My kingdom is not of this world”. 37Pilate, then asked Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and I came into the world, so that I might testify to the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears My voice.” 38Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went back out to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault at all in Him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40Then they shouted back, “No! Not this Man, but Barabbas”. Now Barabbas was a robber, an insurgent.
