12Then Peter arose, and ran to the sepulcher; and, stooping down, he observed the linen clothes laid aside by themselves, and left, wondering what had occurred. 13And later that same day, two of them went to a village called Emmaus, which was about sixty furlongs from Jerusalem. 14And as they walked along, they talked about all these events which had occurred. 15And while they discussed and reasoned together, Jesus Himself came alongside and walked along with them. 16But their eyes were kept form recognizing Him. 17And He asked them, “What were you discussing, as you walked, and are so sad?” 18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered Him, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have occurred there these past few days!” 19And He asked them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “About Jesus of Nazareth, Who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; 20And how the chief priests and our religious leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and have crucified Him. 21But we had hoped that it had been He Who was going to redeem Israel; and besides all this, today is the third day since those things were done. 22And today, certain women of our company, who had gone early to the sepulcher amazed us; 23For when they did not find His body, they came, and said, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive. 24And some who were with us went to the sepulcher, and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see Jesus.” 25Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Did the Messiah not have to suffer all these things, and then to enter into His glory?” 27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded to them all the scriptures concerning Himself. 28And as they approached the village to which they went (Emmaus); and Jesus acted as though He would have gone further. 29But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us; for it is near evening, and the day is far spent”. And so He went in to stay with them. 30And as He sat at the table eating with them, He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him; and then He vanished from their sight. 32And they said to each other, “Did our hearts not burn within us, while He talked with us along the road, and while He opened and expounded the scriptures to us?” 33And they got up and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven apostles gathered with others; and told them, 34“The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.” 35And then they told what occurred along the way (to Emmaus); and how Jesus became known to them when He broke the bread.

36And as they still talking about this, Jesus Himself stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you”. 37But they were startled and frightened, and supposing that they had seen a ghost. 38And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Observe My hands and My feet, and be certain that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have”. 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41And while they were still in disbelief out of joy, and wonder, Jesus said unto them, “Have you anything to eat here?” 42And they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb. 43And He took it, and ate in front of them. 44And He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me. 45Then He opened their minds so that they might understand the scriptures, 46And told them, “This is what is written: the Messiah would suffer and die, and rise from the dead the third day; 47And that repentance and remission of sins would be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48And you are witnesses of these very things. 49And I am going to send upon you what My Father promised you, the Holy Spirit. But remain in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

50And He led them out as far as to Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, and blessed them. 51And while He was blessing them, He was parted from them, and taken up into heaven. 52And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53And were continually in the Temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
