Matthew 16

1The Pharisees and Sadducees came, to test Him, by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2He replied, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather; for the sky is red’. 3And in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and overcast’. O you hypocrites, you can interpret the appearance of the sky; but cannot interpret the signs of the times! 4A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign; but none shall be given to it, except the sign of the prophet, Jonah.” Then He left them, and went away.

5And when they went across the sea to the other side, His disciples had forgotten to take (bring) bread. 6Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees”. 7And they talked among themselves, and concluded, “It is because we have brought no bread”. 8And Jesus was aware of their discussion; and He said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you concern yourselves because you have brought no bread? 9Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 10Do you not recall the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 11How is it that you did not understand that I was not speaking about bread, but rather that you should beware of the leaven (distortion of truth) of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?” 12Then they understood that He was not warning them about the leaven (yeast) in bread, but about the deceptive doctrine of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am?” 14And they replied, “Some say that You are John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” 15Then He asked them, “But what about you - who do you say you that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ (Messiah), the Son of the living God”. 17And Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-jona (son of Jonah); for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father, Who is in heaven. 18And I also say this to you, ‘That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against (overcome) it. 19And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’” 20Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no man that He was the Christ (the Messiah).

21From that time forth Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and scribes, and that He must be killed, and on the third day be raised to life again. 22Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Be it far from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You.” 23But He turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan; you are an offence to Me; for you prefer the things of men, and not the things that are of God.”

24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If any of you want to be My follower, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 25For whoever wants to save his life shall lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake, shall find it. 26For how is a man profited, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works. 28Truly I tell you, ‘There are some standing here, who shall not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in His kingdom.”
