Numbers 4:5 Parallel
CommentaryKeil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament
"The redeemed of the Levites" are the 22,000 who were redeemed by means of the Levites. In Numbers 3:50, the Chethibh הפּדים is the correct reading, and the Keri הפּדים an unnecessary emendation. The number of the first-born and that of the Levites has already been noticed in the introduction to Numbers 1.

Aaron shall come. The law prohibiting any person, except the high priest on one day in the year, to enter into the most holy place, must have admitted an exception while the Israelites were in the wilderness; that exception, therefore, is here expressly made; and the directions given respecting it must be religiously observed, or the service could not be safely performed. While the cloud rested on the tabernacle, the general rule was in force; but when it was removed, then the priests might enter to prepare the sacred vessels for removal.
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place,
"They shall make an ark of acacia wood. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height.
And you shall put in it the ark of the testimony, and you shall screen the ark with the veil.
And you shall put the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and set up the screen for the door of the tabernacle.
and the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.
This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: the most holy things.
