Those men that did bring up the evil report died - Thus ten of the twelve that searched out the land were struck dead, by the justice of God, on the spot! Caleb, of the tribe of Judah, and Joshua, of the tribe of Ephraim, alone escaped, because they had followed God fully. When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments.
So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say:
Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.
That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
