7:9 Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod - This Moses ordinarily held in his hand, and delivered it to Aaron upon occasion, for the execution of his commands.
The book of Exodus--so named in the Greek version from the march of Israel out of Egypt--opens upon a scene of oppression very different from the prosperity and triumph in which Genesis had closed. Israel is being cruelly crushed by the new dynasty which has arisen in Egypt (i.) and the story of the book is the story of her redemption. But the Jewish leaders demanded, "What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it."
They answered, "Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?
Then the LORD asked him, "What is that in your hand?" "A shepherd's staff," Moses replied.
And take your shepherd's staff with you, and use it to perform the miraculous signs I have shown you."
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the LORD had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent!
"Ask the LORD your God for a sign of confirmation, Ahaz. Make it as difficult as you want--as high as heaven or as deep as the place of the dead."
