"The LORD saw this and drew back, provoked to anger by his own sons and daughters.
"The LORD says, 'Am I not storing up these things, sealing them away in my treasury?
Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair.
Don't be so angry with us, LORD. Please don't remember our sins forever. Look at us, we pray, and see that we are all your people.
Look now, people of Judah; you have as many gods as you have towns. You have as many altars of shame--altars for burning incense to your god Baal--as there are streets in Jerusalem.
So this is what the LORD says to his people: "You love to wander far from me and do not restrain yourselves. Therefore, I will no longer accept you as my people. Now I will remember all your wickedness and will punish you for your sins."
