So Moses cried out to the LORD for help, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the LORD set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?"
I will no longer drive out the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died.
I did this to test Israel--to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the LORD as their ancestors did."
That is why the LORD left those nations in place. He did not quickly drive them out or allow Joshua to conquer them all.
He did this to teach warfare to generations of Israelites who had no experience in battle.
1 Kings 9:21
These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them for his labor force, and they serve in the labor force to this day.
