"But, dear family of Jacob, you refuse to ask for my help. You have grown tired of me, O Israel!
We have fasted before you!' they say. 'Why aren't you impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and you don't even notice it!' "I will tell you why!" I respond. "It's because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers.
When will you stop running? When will you stop panting after other gods? But you say, 'Save your breath. I'm in love with these foreign gods, and I can't stop loving them now!'
But the people replied, "Don't waste your breath. We will continue to live as we want to, stubbornly following our own evil desires."
They look everywhere except to the Most High. They are as useless as a crooked bow. Their leaders will be killed by their enemies because of their insolence toward me. Then the people of Egypt will laugh at them.
"You have said terrible things about me," says the LORD. "But you say, 'What do you mean? What have we said against you?'
