Paul, called as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Sosthenes our brother:1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord--both their Lord and ours.2To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus,4I always thank my God for you because of the grace He has given you in Christ Jesus.
that you were enriched in him in every way, in all speech and all knowledge.5For in Him you have been enriched in every way, in all speech and all knowledge,
In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you,6because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.
so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.7Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.8He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God is faithful; you were called by him into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.9God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.
Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.10I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by members of Chloe's people, that there is rivalry among you.11My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
What I am saying is this: One of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ."12What I mean is this: Individuals among you are saying, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”
Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul's name?13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?
I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,14I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,
so that no one can say you were baptized in my name.15so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.
I did, in fact, baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't recall if I baptized anyone else.16Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that I do not remember if I baptized anyone else.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect.17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the intelligence of the intelligent.19For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish?20Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached.21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom,22Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom,
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.23but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
because God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth.26Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth.
Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world--what is viewed as nothing--to bring to nothing what is viewed as something,28He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are,
so that no one may boast in his presence.29so that no one may boast in His presence.
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us--our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,30It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.
in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
