When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.1When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death.
After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.2They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.3When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.
"I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said. "What's that to us?" they said. "See to it yourself!"4“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What is that to us?” they replied. “You bear the responsibility.”
So he threw the silver into the temple and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.5So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
The chief priests took the silver and said, "It's not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money."6The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, “It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
They conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners.7After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.
Therefore that field has been called "Blood Field" to this day.8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites,9Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him by the people of Israel,
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord had commanded me.”
Now Jesus stood before the governor. "Are you the King of the Jews?" the governor asked him. Jesus answered, "You say so."11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him: “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn't answer.12And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.
Then Pilate said to him, "Don't you hear how much they are testifying against you?"13Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?”
But he didn't answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.14But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.
At the festival the governor's custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted.15Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing.
At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.16At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Who is it you want me to release for you--Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"17So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.18For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
While he was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I've suffered terribly in a dream because of him."19While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.”
The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.
The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" "Barabbas!" they answered.21“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they replied.
Pilate asked them, "What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?" They all answered, "Crucify him!"22“What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!”
Then he said, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they kept shouting all the more, "Crucify him!"23“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves!"24When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”
All the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"25All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified.26So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's residence and gathered the whole company around him.27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him.
They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe.28They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him: "Hail, King of the Jews!"29And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt down before Him to mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head.30Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly.
After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.31After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.
As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross.32Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull),33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull,
they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.34they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.35When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.
Then they sat down and were guarding him there.36And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.
Above his head they put up the charge against him in writing: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.37Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then two criminals were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.38Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right hand and the other on His left.
Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads39And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads
and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him and said,41In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,
"He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.42“He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
He trusts in God; let God rescue him now--if he takes pleasure in him! For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"43He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with him taunted him.44In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.
From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over the whole land.45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani ? " that is, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah."47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.”
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.48One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.
But the rest said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."49But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.50When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.
Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.51At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.52The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.53After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.
When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him were there, watching from a distance.55And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.
He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus's body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released.58He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen,59So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.
and said, "Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive he said, 'After three days I will rise again.'63“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’
So give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come, steal him, and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."64So give the order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last deception would be worse than the first.”
"You have a guard of soldiers," Pilate told them. "Go and make it as secure as you know how."65“You have a guard,” Pilate said. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”
They went and secured the tomb by setting a seal on the stone and placing the guard.66So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
