| 2The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave it his power, his throne, and complete authority. |
| 3One of its heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but its fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. | 3One of the beast's heads looked like it had sustained a mortal wound, but its fatal wound was healed. Rapt with amazement, the whole world followed the beast. |
| 4They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? | 5The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies. It was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. | 5The beast was allowed to speak arrogant and blasphemous things, and it was given authority for 42 months. |

| 9If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen. | 9Let everyone listen: |

| 13It also performs great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in front of people. | 13It performs spectacular signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people. |
| 14It deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs that it is permitted to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. | 14It deceives those living on earth with the signs that it is allowed to do on behalf of the first beast, telling them to make an image for the beast who was wounded by a sword and yet lived. |
| 15It was permitted to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. | 15The second beast was allowed to impart life to the image of the first beast so that the image of the beast could talk and order the execution of those who would not worship the image of the beast. |
| 16And it makes everyone--small and great, rich and poor, free and slave--to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, | 16The second beast forces all people—important and unimportant, rich and poor, free and slaves—to be marked on their right hands or on their foreheads, |
| 17so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast's name or the number of its name. | 17so that no one may buy or sell unless he has the mark, which is the beast's name or the number of its name. |
| 18This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a person. Its number is 666. | 18In this case wisdom is needed: Let the person who has understanding calculate the total number of the beast, because it is a human total number, and the sum of the number is 666. |
