Ephraim feeds on the wind and pursues the east wind all day long; they multiply falsehood and violence; they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried to Egypt.1Ephraim chases the wind and pursues the east wind all day long; he multiplies lies and violence; he makes a covenant with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt.
The LORD has an indictment against Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him according to his deeds.2The LORD also brings a charge against Judah. He will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.
In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he strove with God.3In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel, and in his vigor he wrestled with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us—4Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought His favor; he found Him at Bethel and spoke with Him there—

“So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.”6But you must return to your God, maintaining love and justice, and always waiting on your God.
A merchant, in whose hands are false balances, he loves to oppress.7A merchant loves to defraud with dishonest scales in his hands.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”8And Ephraim boasts: “How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that is sinful.”
I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast.9But I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt. I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast.
I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets gave parables.10I spoke through the prophets and multiplied their visions; I gave parables through the prophets.
If there is iniquity in Gilead, they shall surely come to nothing: in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls; their altars also are like stone heaps on the furrows of the field.11Is there iniquity in Gilead? They will surely come to nothing. Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Indeed, their altars will be heaps of stones in the furrows of the field.
Jacob fled to the land of Aram; there Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he guarded sheep.12Jacob fled to the land of Aram and Israel worked for a wife—for a wife he tended sheep.
By a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was guarded.13But by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.
Ephraim has given bitter provocation; so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.14Ephraim has provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon him and repay him for his contempt.
