I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of His appearing and His kingdom:1I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. 2preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new.3For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.4and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
But as for you, be serious about everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 5As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time for my departure is close. 6For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
There is reserved for me in the future the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved His appearing. 8Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
Make every effort to come to me soon,9Do your best to come to me soon.
for Demas has deserted me, because he loved this present world, and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 10For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you, for he is useful to me in the ministry. 11Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.
I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 12Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.
When you come, bring the cloak I left in Troas with Carpus, as well as the scrolls, especially the parchments. 13When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.
Alexander the coppersmith did great harm to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works. 14Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
Watch out for him yourself because he strongly opposed our words. 15Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message.
At my first defense, no one stood by me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be counted against them. 16At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the proclamation might be fully made through me and all the Gentiles might hear. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. 17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil work and will bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever! Amen. 18The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
