| 1Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. | 1“And you, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you, and engrave on it a city, even Jerusalem. |
| 2Then lay siege against it: construct a siege wall, build a ramp, pitch military camps, and place battering rams against it on all sides. | 2And put siegeworks against it, and build a siege wall against it, and cast up a mound against it. Set camps also against it, and plant battering rams against it all around. |
| 3Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel." | 3And you, take an iron griddle, and place it as an iron wall between you and the city; and set your face toward it, and let it be in a state of siege, and press the siege against it. This is a sign for the house of Israel. |
| 4Then lie down on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. You will bear their iniquity for the number of days you lie on your side. | 4“Then lie on your left side, and place the punishment of the house of Israel upon it. For the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their punishment. |
| 5For I have assigned you the years of their iniquity according to the number of days you lie down, 390 days; so you will bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. | 5For I assign to you a number of days, 390 days, equal to the number of the years of their punishment. So long shall you bear the punishment of the house of Israel. |
| 6When you have completed these days, lie down again, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year. | 6And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the punishment of the house of Judah. Forty days I assign you, a day for each year. |
| 7You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and prophesy against it. | 7And you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, with your arm bared, and you shall prophesy against the city. |
| 8Be aware that I will put cords on you so you cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your siege." | 8And behold, I will place cords upon you, so that you cannot turn from one side to the other, till you have completed the days of your siege. |
| 9Also take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt. Put them in a single container and make them into bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the number of days you lie on your side, 390 days. | 9“And you, take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer, and put them into a single vessel and make your bread from them. During the number of days that you lie on your side, 390 days, you shall eat it. |
| 10The food you eat each day will be eight ounces by weight; you will eat it from time to time. | 10And your food that you eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day; from day to day you shall eat it. |
| 11You are also to drink water by measure, a sixth of a gallon, which you will drink from time to time. | 11And water you shall drink by measure, the sixth part of a hin; from day to day you shall drink. |
| 12You will eat it as you would a barley cake and bake it over dried human excrement in their sight." | 12And you shall eat it as a barley cake, baking it in their sight on human dung.” |
| 13The LORD said, "This is how the Israelites will eat their bread--ceremonially unclean--among the nations where I will banish them." | 13And the LORD said, “Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.” |
| 14But I said, "Oh, Lord GOD, I have never been defiled. From my youth until now I have not eaten anything that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts. And impure meat has never entered my mouth." | 14Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I have never defiled myself. From my youth up till now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has tainted meat come into my mouth.” |
| 15He replied to me, "Look, I will let you use cow dung instead of human excrement, and you can make your bread over that." | 15Then he said to me, “See, I assign to you cow’s dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread.” |
| 16Then He said to me, "Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat bread rationed by weight and in dread drink water by measure. | 16Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, behold, I will break the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay. |
| 17So they will lack bread and water; everyone will be devastated and waste away because of their iniquity." | 17I will do this that they may lack bread and water, and look at one another in dismay, and rot away because of their punishment. |
