| 1For you yourselves know, brothers, that our visit with you was not without result. | 1For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: |
| 2On the contrary, after we had previously suffered, and we were treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, we were emboldened by our God to speak the gospel of God to you in spite of great opposition. | 2But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. |
| 3For our exhortation didn't come from error or impurity or an intent to deceive. | 3For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: |
| 4Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but rather God, who examines our hearts. | 4But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. |
| 5For we never used flattering speech, as you know, or had greedy motives--God is our witness-- | 5For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: |
| 6and we didn't seek glory from people, either from you or from others. | 6Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. |
| 7Although we could have been a burden as Christ's apostles, instead we were gentle among you, as a nursing mother nurtures her own children. | 7But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: |
| 8We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. | 8So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. |
| 9For you remember our labor and hardship, brothers. Working night and day so that we would not burden any of you, we preached God's gospel to you. | 9For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. |
| 10You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers. | 10Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: |
| 11As you know, like a father with his own children, | 11As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, |
| 12we encouraged, comforted, and implored each one of you to walk worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. | 12That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. |
| 13This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the message about God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, the message of God, which also works effectively in you believers. | 13For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. |
| 14For you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, since you have also suffered the same things from people of your own country, just as they did from the Jews | 14For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: |
| 15who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us; they displease God and are hostile to everyone, | 15Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: |
| 16hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. As a result, they are always completing the number of their sins, and wrath has overtaken them at last. | 16Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. |
| 17But as for us, brothers, after we were forced to leave you for a short time (in person, not in heart), we greatly desired and made every effort to return and see you face to face. | 17But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. |
| 18So we wanted to come to you--even I, Paul, time and again--but Satan hindered us. | 18Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. |
| 19For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not you? | 19For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? |
| 20For you are our glory and joy! | 20For ye are our glory and joy. |
