The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Moab for three crimes, even four, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime. 1This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime.
Therefore, I will send fire against Moab, and it will consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die with a tumult, with shouting and the sound of the ram's horn. 2So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn.
I will cut off the judge from the land and kill all its officials with him. The LORD has spoken. 3I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken!
The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Judah for three crimes, even four, because they have rejected the instruction of the LORD and have not kept His statutes. The lies that their ancestors followed have led them astray. 4This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray.
Therefore, I will send fire against Judah, and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem. 5So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses."
The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Israel for three crimes, even four, because they sell a righteous person for silver and a needy person for a pair of sandals. 6This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals.
They trample the heads of the poor on the dust of the ground and block the path of the needy. A man and his father have sexual relations with the same girl, profaning My holy name. 7They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity.
They stretch out beside every altar on garments taken as collateral, and in the house of their God, they drink wine obtained through fines. 8They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God!
Yet I destroyed the Amorite as Israel advanced; his height was like the cedars, and he was as sturdy as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath. 9For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground.
And I brought you from the land of Egypt and led you 40 years in the wilderness in order to possess the land of the Amorite. 10I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own.
I raised up some of your sons as prophets and some of your young men as Nazirites. Is this not the case, Israelites? This is the LORD's declaration. 11I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking!
But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets," Do not prophesy." 12"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!'
Look, I am about to crush you in your place as a wagon full of sheaves crushes grain. 13Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down.
Escape will fail the swift, the strong one will not prevail by his strength, and the brave will not save his life. 14Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives.
The archer will not stand his ground, the one who is swift of foot will not save himself, and the one riding a horse will not save his life. 15Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses.
Even the most courageous of the warriors will flee naked on that day-- this is the LORD's declaration. 16Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking!
